Right amidst the madding crowd of S.N. Banerjee Road, opposite the Kolkata Corporation Building and just off the shoppers paradise of New Market lies the veiled campus of the Kolkata Mounted Police Stables. The area comprises huge stables and a two-storied building among other smaller units. This is home to the magnificent black and chestnut horses around 78 in number who form the Kolkata Mounted Police Heritage Department. The Kolkata Police is extremely proud of this gallant force since they have always excelled in crowd control during ceremonies, sports events and other gatherings. It is learnt that during the British Raj, the Mounted Police used to maintain law and order and also regulated traffic. The aim of the Project is to give a facelift to the Entire Area and to build a museum to display in beautiful panels- the untold story of this section of the Kolkata Police that has been built upon the bond of unflinching trust between humans and horses.
